On October 25th, local time on October 24th, the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced sanctions against Colombian President Gustavo Petro and Interior Minister Armando Benedetti for drug trafficking. The sanctions put the two and two other individuals on the "Specially Designated Nationals List", marking a further escalation of the conflict between the US government and Colombia. Colombian President Petro later expressed his protest against the US adding him and his family to the sanctions list.
