On October 25, Sean Parnel, the chief Pentagon spokesperson, said on the social media platform "X" that in support of President Trump's directive to dismantle transnational criminal organizations and fight drug terrorism to defend the United States, the Secretary of War, or Secretary of Defense, has directed the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier strike group and its carrier-based air wing to the U.S. Southern Command's area of responsibility (covering Latin America, the Caribbean and parts of South America). The carrier deployment is the strongest signal yet of the Trump administration's plan to expand the reach of airstrikes, which have previously been limited to small ships, in what officials say is an effort to dismantle drug smuggling networks and destabilize the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
