Trump plans to expand drug crackdown from sea to land

On October 24th, US President Donald Trump said on Thursday local time that "the ground will be the next target" in his operation to stop the flow of drugs from Venezuela into the United States, in the clearest sign that he is ready to expand the scope of strikes, which so far have been limited to maritime targets. Trump did not discuss specific targets, but he has repeatedly hinted that he may order the US military to escalate attacks against the ground infrastructure of drug cartels. Striking on ground targets would be a major escalation in tensions between the United States and Venezuela. After the first US ship attack, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in September ordered the indefinite deployment of troops in five states, expanding his initial mobilization of 15,000 soldiers. Trump said he plans to brief Congress on operations against drug cartels linked to Venezuela, but does not need to declare war on drug cartels.
