Strategy, the world's largest bitcoin corporate treasury, is adding to its holdings at the slowest pace in five years, adding just 388 bitcoins to the quarter, bringing its total holdings to 640,031 at the end of the third quarter - an increase of just 0.1 per cent.
In previous quarters, Strategy's treasury growth has typically been high single-digit or even double-digit percentages. In fact, in the fourth quarter of 2024, its BTC holdings grew by 77%, the highest in many years.
Unfortunately, with the decrease in BTC purchases, the share price of Strategy's MSTR common stock also fell by 10% this quarter.
Back in 2020, Michael Saylor's 1990s enterprise software company switched to leveraged bitcoin purchases and started from a smaller base, having amassed 70,470 bitcoins by the end of the year.
Its BTC treasury holdings continued to be strong in 2021, growing at double-digit and high-single-digit percentages, slowing in 2022 before picking up again in 2023 and 2024.
