While publicly traded companies can effectively allocate capital in the economy with audited financial data and operational information, private companies are increasingly attracting investors' attention. The number of publicly traded companies in the US has halved to more than 4,000 since 2000, while the number of private venture-backed companies has grown 25-fold, according to analysts at Bank of America in a research note. "Companies are also moving to or staying private, with start-ups now staying private for an average of 16 years after formation, 33 per cent longer than a decade ago."
