Reddit is suing companies like Perplexity for illegally scraping data

Reddit has filed a lawsuit against Perplexity AI and three other companies, alleging that the companies conducted unauthorized data scraping from the Reddit website. According to the lawsuit filed Wednesday in Manhattan federal court, data scraping companies Oxylabs UAB, AWMProxy and SerpApi collected Reddit data through Google search results with the aim of reselling it. Perplexity purchased the data from at least one of the companies, the lawsuit alleges. Reddit's growing repository of data has become a valuable commodity with the rise of AI models that rely on large amounts of data to train and deliver relevant results. Reddit has signed agreements with OpenAI and Alphabet to license its use of Reddit data for training, but has also taken legal action against some companies that did not enter into formal agreements with them. Reddit also filed a similar data scraping lawsuit against Anthropic in a San Francisco court earlier this year.
