The New York Times reported Tuesday that President Donald Trump has asked the Department of Justice to pay up to $230 million in restitution for criminal investigations into him around his first term in office.
The New York Times noted that any potential settlement would likely need to be approved by federal officials Trump appointed in his second term, including Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who represented Trump in criminal cases as defense counsel before returning to the White House in early January.
"In terms of all the lawsuits... yes, they probably owe me a lot of money," Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House late on Tuesday, acknowledging that the $230 million mentioned in the Times report was "probably" accurate.
Mr. Trump also said that any decision by the Justice Department to pay compensation "would have to go through my approval, and it's very strange that I decide how much to pay myself." "In other words, have you ever been in a situation where you had to decide for yourself how much to pay yourself?" Mr. Trump said. But he added: "I did suffer tremendous damage, and any compensation I get will go to charity."
