On October 20th, the "Onchain Summer Awards" Hackathon competition held by Coinbase's Base network was questioned, and it was accused of awarding awards to fake applications associated with employees.
The competition was held last month and attracted more than 500 development teams to participate, with a total prize pool of $200,000. However, after the results were announced on October 7, developers said they found problems with the winning projects. Ogvio co-founder Alanas investigated and found that the second-place project, Owatch, and the third-place project, Opi Trade, suspected that the basic web pages generated by AI lacked actual functionality.
What's more concerning is that the investigation revealed that these fake projects were linked to Coinbase employees. Many legitimate teams with actual working products were defeated by these "shell" projects. Angry developers demanded an explanation from the Base team on social media, but the organizers have so far not responded to the allegations.
