The US government shutdown, which was widely believed to last only two or three weeks, is now turning into a major crisis in Washington, and is likely to last until November.
"To end the shutdown, either the White House will negotiate a deal or the Democrats will compromise. But for now, there are no signs of either," analysts at Beacon Policy Advisors said in a report. "The current government shutdown could become the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history."
As of Monday, the partial government shutdown that began this month had lasted 20 days; the longest in U.S. history was 35 days, during Trump's first term nearly seven years ago.
Prediction market Kalshi said on Friday that the current shutdown could last about 41 days, up from a forecast two weeks ago that it would last only 14 days.
