On October 19, the Israeli military said that Hamas attacked Israeli forces in the southern Gaza Strip on Sunday, and Israel then launched air strikes in response. This is the first time Hamas has successfully attacked Israeli troops since the ceasefire agreement took effect. The Israeli army said that Hamas militants fired anti-tank missiles and opened fire on the Israeli army in the Israeli-controlled Gaza area. The attack targeted troops dismantling infrastructure in parts of the city of Rafah, which is located outside the so-called "yellow line". The "yellow line" is the line of defense that the Israeli army retreated to after the ceasefire. In response, the Israeli army launched air strikes, saying the goal was to destroy tunnel entrances and other military installations used by Hamas. The Israeli military said the incident was a "flagrant violation" of the cease-fire and vowed "a firm response", before the armed wing of Hamas said it was not aware of any incidents or clashes in the Rafah area of the Gaza Strip.
