Ross Calvin, founder and chief executive of the mining company Parhelion, has proposed building "The Great Colossus of Prometheus" on Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a height of about 450 feet (about 137 meters). The total investment is expected to be about 450 million US dollars.
If completed, the statue will be taller than the Muse of Liberty (about 305 feet from the pedestal to the torch), making it a new landmark in the San Francisco Bay Area. To move forward with the project, federal approval is required to reclassify Alcatraz Island from a national park to a national monument, and relevant planning and construction permits are obtained.
