According to Bloomberg, Hyperliquid is currently controlled by a small number of insiders, raising questions about its degree of decentralization. For backers, including Paradigm and Pantera Capital, it is both a bet on the future of digital finance and a reminder that the entire industry still operates outside the formal regulatory system.
At its heart, Hyperliquid is a minimalist trading platform run by Singapore-based Hyperliquid Labs, a team of about 15 people. As is customary in the industry, the front-end of the website is blocked for US users, but anyone can trade on the blockchain that underpins it. The allure of not requiring identity verification echoes an early pattern: fast-growing exchanges that adopt a similar model tend to quickly come under regulatory scrutiny.
If HLP is an engine, validators are the control room. Hyperliquid has about 24 validators, compared with more than a million on the Ethereum network. Critics argue that this has led to an over-concentration of power. The Hyper Foundation controls nearly two-thirds of the pledged HYPE - its native token - and thus has significant influence over validator decisions and governance, although its nodes have chosen to abstain in recent decisions to respect community consensus.
