According to ABC News, Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has announced new regulations for cryptocurrency ATMs, calling the devices "high-risk products" related to money laundering, fraud, and child exploitation.
According to Burke, the number of cryptocurrency ATMs in Australia has ballooned from 23 to more than 2,000 in six years. The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) survey found that 85% of large user transactions involved fraud or money laundering.
The proposed legislation would empower AUSTRAC to restrict or ban "high-risk products", specifically targeting cryptocurrency ATMs. Burke said the bill would be introduced in parliament in the coming months, but declined to say whether it would ban the devices altogether.
