A US judge has ordered the Trump administration to suspend plans to lay off thousands of federal employees during the government shutdown. US District Judge Susan Illston in San Francisco made the ruling on Wednesday. More than 4,100 federal employees have received layoff notices since last week. The order is not a final ruling on the merits of the case. It means that more than two dozen federal agencies named in the case cannot issue new layoff notices if they involve projects involving union members who filed the lawsuit. The ruling means that the government must suspend action on notices already issued while the judge weighs whether to impose a longer-term ban.
