The US fiscal deficit still has room to fall as a percentage of GDP to 3 per cent, Treasury secretary David Bescent said on Wednesday. "The deficit as a percentage of GDP - that's the key metric - starts with a '5' right now," Mr. Bescent said at an event, adding that the size of the deficit for the fiscal year ending September 30 was smaller than the previous year. The Treasury has not yet released annual deficit figures because of the federal government shutdown. Asked if he wanted the deficit as a percentage of GDP to start with a '3', Mr. Bescent replied: "Yes, that's still possible."
