On October 15th, two MIT-educated brothers, Anton Peraire-Bueno (25) and James Peraire-Bueno (29), were charged with cryptocurrency fraud in a court hearing in Manhattan on Tuesday.
Prosecutors accused the pair of stealing $25 million in cryptocurrency through a complex Ethereum blockchain transaction in just 12 seconds in April 2023. The indictment said the "unprecedented" fraud scheme was orchestrated over several months and "undermined the integrity of the Ethereum blockchain" using the professional skills developed by the brothers during their education.
Prosecutors said the brothers studied the trading practices of the victim before committing the theft, and then hid their identities and the whereabouts of the stolen money through shelf companies, private cryptocurrency addresses and overseas exchanges. The two also searched for keywords such as "how to launder cryptocurrency". Defence counsel argued that the two did not commit fraud, but only "outsmarted some predatory automated trading robots". The two are currently released on $250,000 bail, and the trial is expected to last until the first week of November.
