Roger Ver, an early Bitcoin evangelist known as "Bitcoin Jesus," has formally settled with the Department of Justice, admitting to knowingly failing to declare his Bitcoin holdings when he renounced his US citizenship in 2014.
According to the Department of Justice, Mr. Weill entered into a deferred prosecution agreement and paid nearly $50 million in back taxes, penalties and interest to the Internal Revenue Service. Prosecutors said Mr. Weill's failure to file a complaint cost the United States $16.90 million. The government has moved to drop the charges against him.
"Mr. Vail is taking responsibility for his actions and has agreed to pay a substantial fine," Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said in a statement on Tuesday.
Mr. Vail, who has been a citizen of St Kitts and Nevis since 2014, was arrested in Spain last year and extradited to the US on related charges. His case is being investigated by the cybercrime unit of the Internal Revenue Service's criminal investigation division.
