Canaan has launched a 2 trillion-watt pilot project in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to mine bitcoin through the generation of idle natural gas.
The mining hardware maker announced on Monday that it is working with Calgary-based Aurora AZ Energy Ltd. on the project, which will convert natural gas that might otherwise have been flared or idled into electricity to power bitcoin mining operations directly at the oil and gas wellheads. 700 of Canaan's latest Avalon A15 Pro miners - worth more than $2 million - will be deployed at the 2.50 trillion-watt site, along with containerized data modules.
