Bhutan is migrating its autonomous sovereign identity system from Polygon to Ethereum, in a move that will enable nearly 800,000 of its residents to verify their identities and access government services. Aya Miyaguchi, chair of the Ethereum Foundation, revealed that the integration with Ethereum has been successfully completed, and the migration of all resident identity credentials is expected to be completed by Quarter 1 in 2026. Miyaguchi and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin attended the launch ceremony, as well as Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Crown Prince JigmeNamgyelWangchuk. Previously, Bhutan has been running its national identity system on Polygon since August 2024, while Hyperledger Indy was used before that. As of now, Brazil and Vietnam are the few countries that have partially integrated blockchain-based autonomous sovereign identity solutions.
