Informed: European Union plans new trade deal with US

The European Union will work with the United States on a new plan to implement the next phase of a trade pact between the two sides, with the goal of shelving Washington's proposal that would require the European Union to roll back some of the regulatory measures that Trump has long criticised, according to people familiar with the matter. The current thinking is to develop a "checklist" to ensure the deal remains on track and moves forward within the parameters set by the two sides this summer, the people said. It follows reports that earlier this month Washington asked Brussels to amend several technology, digital and corporate environmental laws, requirements that European Union officials deemed too onerous to use as a starting point for negotiations. The European Union said it was ready to discuss the issues and address concerns, but would not give up its regulatory autonomy. After talks last weekend between European Union Trade Commissioner Sergei Sefcovic and U.S. Trade Representative Greg Greer, Brussels decided to shelve the demands and instead work on a new list, people familiar with the matter said.
