Mr. Trump is seeking to replace current chairperson Jerome Powell. During the two-hour interview, the candidates were said to have been personally "tortured" by Mr. Betty, Hunter McMaster, a Treasury official, and Francis Browne, an adviser. Some of those interviewed said Mr. Betty had asked for their views on a point he made in a recent article.
The article calls for an overhaul of the Federal Reserve and criticises its quantitative easing programme as a "functionally acquired monetary policy experiment". Rick Rieder, BlackRock's global fixed income chief investment officer, is doing "very well", according to a person familiar with the matter. Mr. Bessant, who has been tight-lipped about the whole process, said in a recent interview on Fox Business that he wanted to find someone who was "open-minded" and "forward-looking".
