Hayao Takaichi, who is expected to become Japan's first female prime minister, has appointed Shunichi Suzuki, the former finance minister, as the ruling party's new secretary-general, in a move seen as an attempt to calm concerns about fiscal discipline. Takayuki Kobayashi, who had previously competed with Takaichi in the party leadership election and supported her in the run-off round, has been appointed chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party's policy survey; Yukiko Arimura, a former female active minister, has been appointed chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party's general affairs; and Keiji Furuya, a former chairman of the National Public Security Commission, has been appointed chairman of election countermeasures. The appointment reflects both Takaichi's return to supporters who "helped her to the top of the party" and hints at her attempt to demonstrate a "new style of governance" by increasing the representation of women in policymaking.
