"I think in terms of four-year cycles, the reality is that we are likely to continue to see some form of cycle," said Saad Ahmed, head of Asia-Pacific at cryptocurrency exchange Gemini.
"It ultimately comes from people getting very excited and overextending, and then you see the collapse, and then it goes back to equilibrium," Mr. Ahmed said.
However, Mr. Ahmed said the growing involvement of institutions in the cryptocurrency industry might help the market absorb some of the volatility. "You will see some volatility that stops somewhat, but you will still see some kind of cycle because at the end of the day it is driven by human emotion," Mr. Ahmed said.
