Coinbase (ticker: COIN) said in a statement that it is applying to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) for a national trust company license.
Greg Tusar, vice president of institutional products at Coinbase, said in the statement: "The OCC license will simplify the regulation of new products and foster continuous innovation to integrate digital assets into traditional finance. We are not the first cryptocurrency company to apply for a federal license and will not be the last." Tusar said Coinbase has no intention of becoming a bank. So far, Paxos, BitGo, Ripple and Circle have also applied for banking licenses from the OCC in response to the Trump administration's crypto-friendly regulatory environments.
