US President Donald Trump said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had agreed to a 20-point plan aimed at ending Israel's conflict with Hamas after talks on Monday. Trump called it a "historic day for peace". Speaking at a joint news conference with Netanyahu, Trump said the deal had the support of leaders of the Middle East and Muslim-majority countries and suggested the plan could lay the foundation for a broader peace in the region. The proposal calls for Hamas to have no role in the future governance of Gaza. The plan stipulates that if both Israel and Hamas accept it, the two-year conflict will end immediately, all hostages and the remains of the victims will be returned within 72 hours, and Israel will withdraw its troops in stages. The agreement also stipulates that Israel will not occupy or annex Gaza. The plan calls for Gaza to be administered by a technical, non-politicized Palestinian council that would run day-to-day public services and be overseen by a peace council, chaired by Mr. Trump, that would invite other world leaders, including Tony Blair, the former British prime minister.
