OpenAI allows ChatGPT users to shop directly through its popular artificial intelligence chatbot without leaving the platform. The company said on Monday that users in the United States will be able to buy goods from local sellers on the ecommerce platform Etsy, as well as from some Shopify merchants, within ChatGPT. The service, called Instant Checkout, currently supports purchases of only a single item. OpenAI also released an open-source technology standard, called the Agentic Commerce Protocol, for merchants to integrate their products with ChatGPT so that they can be sold directly within the chatbot. The company hopes to attract more merchants to the ChatGPT platform. However, OpenAI said that Amazon and Walmart, the two largest digital retailers in the United States, have not yet adopted the protocol.
