The Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) will hold a joint roundtable at SEC headquarters today (September 29) at 1 p.m., marking the first time the two agencies have jointly hosted such an event in 14 years.
This is the first time in 14 years that the sister institutions have jointly launched a joint initiative to harmonize regulatory frameworks for shared priorities such as cryptocurrencies and prediction markets. The last joint roundtable was held on August 1, 2011, and focused on cross-border issues in swap regulation.
Second, it is the first time that the leaders of Wall Street's major exchanges have sat down with their digital counterparts to discuss how markets work together. It is a stunning turnaround for an industry long seen as fringe, and a clear signal that cryptocurrencies now have a place in the broader financial system.
