Mr. Trump praised the performance of the Ukrainian military and mocked Russia's military efforts at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, after telling Mr. Zelensky six months ago that "you don't have an advantage" in a war with Russia, according to an analysis in the Wall Street Journal. US officials said Mr. Trump's move was partly aimed at pressuring Mr. Putin to broker a deal, as there has been little substantive progress on a truce since last month's Putt meeting in Alaska. Mr. Trump has spent time with US officials who have long advocated a tougher stance on Ukraine, people familiar with the discussions said, noting that Russia has made little progress in recent years. Mr. Trump has also been told that a planned attack on Ukraine would require US intelligence support. For now, officials said, Mr. Trump has changed his rhetoric, not his policy. He is still approving arms sales to Ukraine but restricting its use of American-made weapons against the Russian mainland. It is uncertain whether Mr. Trump's shift in tone will translate into a policy change.
