Analysis: Nvidia's investment in OpenAI has once again raised concerns about an AI bubble

OpenAI and NVIDIA (NVDA. O) are teaming up again three years after they jointly fueled a global artificial intelligence boom, but the deal quickly raised concerns about an AI bubble. NVIDIA said on Monday it would invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI to help support the latter's sprawling data centers, which will be outfitted with NVIDIA chips. Analysts have questioned whether NVIDIA is investing heavily to sustain the market and prompt the companies to keep buying its products. "This move will clearly exacerbate'circular 'concerns," wrote Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon. NVIDIA was involved in more than 50 different venture capital deals for AI companies in 2024 and is on track to surpass that number this year, according to PitchBook data. But Mr. Rasgon said the size of the OpenAI investment "appears to far outstrip all other deals" and that the deal "could exacerbate those concerns and raise doubts about the rationality behind the move".
