Trump has said he believes NATO countries should shoot down planes that violate their airspace, lending support to allies who have threatened a tougher response after Russia's repeated incursions. Asked about the matter by reporters during a meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, Trump replied: "Yes, I think it should." Asked if the United States would support NATO allies in such a situation, Trump said "it depends on the circumstances" and praised the military alliance for agreeing to increase defense spending. "We've been very tough on NATO. NATO has taken action. You know, when they go from 2 percent to 5 percent, it's a very united show," he said of the new military spending target.
