According to Coinbase, the company will partner with Cloudflare to launch the x402 Foundation, which aims to establish x402 as a common standard for artificial intelligence-driven payments and promote the development of agency commerce.
The x402 protocol embeds payment functionality directly into network interactions by leveraging the HTTP "402 Payment Required" status code, enabling artificial intelligence agents, Application Programming Interfaces, and applications to exchange value as seamlessly as data.
The protocol currently supports on-demand use of artificial intelligence, real-time data analytics, creator micropayments, storage media, and proxy commerce.
The X402 Foundation will focus on three core areas: establishing neutral and open governance standards, supporting ecosystem growth through grants and tools, and ensuring cross-platform interoperability.
