On September 23rd, Deribit data showed that about $23 billion of bitcoin and ethereum options contracts will expire on Friday, one of the largest expiration dates ever.
Among options contracts expiring at the end of the month, the biggest bets are concentrated at two extremes: protective options to protect against prices falling below $95,000, and call options to bet on prices surging above $140,000. Short-term bets have become popular, reflecting the view that a sudden short squeeze or forced position squaring will drive the next move.
