The US House of Representatives has passed a stopgap spending bill aimed at averting a federal government shutdown crisis on October 1, but it has also led to a heated battle in the Senate over the bill later on Friday - Democrats are expected to veto the bill on the grounds that "health care spending needs to be increased". House Speaker Johnson overcame the dissatisfaction of some of his Republican colleagues and pushed the bill through with 217 votes in favor and 212 votes against. House Democrats voted almost unanimously against the bill. The Senate is scheduled to consider both the House bill and "another version of the stopgap spending bill" proposed by Democratic leader Schumer later on Friday (the bill plans to fund the government until October 31). Both versions of the bill are expected to be rejected, meaning the U.S. government will be deadlocked in a shutdown crisis less than two weeks before the Oct. 1 deadline.
