The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has announced it will grant regulatory exemptions to stablecoin intermediaries, which will not be required to hold a separate financial services licence if they distribute cryptocurrencies issued by providers already licensed in Australia. One expert described the regulator's approach as "pragmatic".
The unprecedented "class exemption", announced on Thursday, allows intermediaries to distribute stablecoins issued by issuers with Australian financial services (AFS) licences without having to apply for separate AFS, market or clearing facility licences.
"ASIC today announced an important step to foster growth and innovation in the digital asset and payments industries," the company said in its statement.
