Binance CEO Richard Teng posted a blog saying that one of our beloved colleagues, Tigran Gambaryan, continues to be held by the Nigerian government for more than 70 days. There has been a lot of public comment on this incident, and I would like to take this opportunity to provide the truth of the matter, lest the views of the international community be unjustly distorted. I also believe that it is time to speak out on this issue on behalf of the global business community. Inviting mid-level employees of the company to a partnership policy meeting and then detaining them sets a dangerous new precedent for all companies globally.
In 2022 and 2023, Tigran's Financial Crimes compliance team assisted law enforcement worldwide in freezing and seizing more than $2.20 billion worth of assets, including more than $285 million in cooperation with U.S. agencies such as the FBI, DOJ, and DEA.
Finally, it is worth noting that Gambaryan did not travel to Nigeria as a "decision-maker" or "negotiator." Instead, he served as a functional expert on financial crime and capacity-building for policy discussions.
