Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase is escalating its conflict with state regulators. After federal regulators dropped a case against the exchange earlier this year, Coinbase has written to the Department of Justice (DOJ) asking it to step in.
In a 14-page letter sent Monday, Coinbase Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal argued that the Justice Department should push Congress to pass a comprehensive federal preemption bill that would prevent states from taking enforcement action against digital assets regulated under federal law.
"When Oregon can sue us for services that are legal under federal law, something is wrong," Grewal said in a post on social media platform X. He described current state enforcement as "government mischief".
