Google (GOOG. O) announced that it will invest 5 billion pounds (about $6.80 billion) in Britain over two years to help build the country's artificial intelligence economy. The tech giant's disclosure of the plan comes as U.S. President Donald Trump prepares to announce economic deals worth more than $10 billion during a visit to the longtime ally this week.
The investment will cover DeepMind, Google's artificial intelligence unit, and AI research related to science and healthcare, according to a statement on Tuesday. Some of the money will go towards a new data centre in Waltham Cross to meet growing demand for Google services including search and maps. Google said the investment was expected to support 8,250 jobs a year in the UK.
