In addition to Wednesday's 25 basis point rate cut, as widely expected, Fed officials are likely to include at least one more rate cut before the end of the year in their plans. Goldman Sachs analyst David Mericle said the latest "dot plot" released by the Fed in June showed that officials' median expectation was for a cumulative two rate cuts in 2025, and this time it is likely to remain at that level. He noted that inflation remains a thorny issue, but the urgency of the labour market has increased. Mericle also said that the Fed chairperson may not directly commit to a rate cut in October at his press conference: "However, Chairperson Powell may gently hint in that direction at the conference."
