The Shibarium cross-chain bridge, which connects Layer 2 network Shibarium to Ethereum, was hit by a flash loan attack on Friday, causing about $2.40 million in ETH and SHIB to be stolen. Due to this, ShibaInu developers have restricted some activities on the network.
The attacker borrowed 4.60 million BONE (Shibarium's governance token, down 16.32%) via Lightning Loan and appears to have obtained 10 of the 12 validator signature keys, thus gaining a two-thirds majority control. The attacker then used this privilege to withdraw approximately 224.57 ETH and 92.60 billion SHIB from the Shibarium cross-chain bridge contract and transfer the funds to his address. The total value of these funds is currently about $2.40 million.
In response to this attack, the Shiba Inu coin developers suspended staking and unstaking functions on the network, effectively freezing the loaned BONE tokens (which were already in the release delay period), thus preventing the attackers from continuing to manipulate the network. In addition, the attackers also obtained about $700,000 in K9 (KNINE) tokens (related to K9 Finance). When the attackers tried to dump KNINE, the K9 Finance DAO stepped in and blacklisted the attackers' wallet addresses, making these tokens impossible to sell.
