The European Parliament is pushing for changes to a controversial European Union-US trade deal reached this summer, potentially triggering fresh friction as the European Union tries to calm tensions with US President Donald Trump. MEPs are pushing for "sunset clauses" to be included in the deal to limit the valid period for tariff cuts on US industrial goods and adjust tariffs on some specific products, according to people familiar with the matter. The European Union Commission, which negotiated the deal in July, relayed the demands to member states this week, the people said. The agreement, under which the United States imposes a 15 percent tariff on most European Union exports while the European Union agrees to eliminate tariffs on American industrial goods, has been criticized by almost all parliamentary groups as unbalanced. The European Parliament's push for revisions could delay ratification of the agreement and could even jeopardize the entire agreement.
