After talks with Democrats broke down, Senate Republicans invoked the so-called "nuclear option" to quickly confirm the Trump administration's second cabinet nominee. Republican senators voted 53-45 on Thursday to approve a new Senate rule that would allow for group confirmation of certain executive branch nominees, a move they say is necessary to combat Democratic obstruction. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who has a 53-47 majority in the Senate, set a new precedent by using a legislative process that allows a simple majority to veto Senate rules. Thune is currently pushing for the simultaneous confirmation of 48 civilian nominees, most of them for deputy secretary of state, assistant secretary of state or ambassadorial positions abroad.
