On September 10, Ethereum saw a rare mass penalty in which 39 validators were penalized for operator errors related to the SSV Network, one of the largest coordinated penalties since Ethereum switched to a proof-of-stake (PoS) mechanism in 2022.
According to blockchain explorer Beaconcha.in, the penalties for these validators highlight the risks posed by poorly maintained infrastructure when staking. In Ethereum's PoS mechanism, validators will be fined a certain amount of ether if they commit malicious or erroneous behaviors such as double-signing and verifying multiple blocks in the same slot. In this incident, 39 validators were fined due to operational errors by the operator. The specific reasons for the mistakes may include infrastructure configuration problems, signer configuration errors, etc.
Detained validators will face severe penalties. According to Ethereum's confiscation mechanism, part of their staked ether will be burned, up to 1 ETH, and validators will be gradually removed from the network over a period of 36 days. During the withdrawal period, the confiscated validators will gradually reduce their ether coins, and will also receive an "associated penalty" on the 18th day, which will be even greater if more validators are confiscated at the same time.
