On September 11, Mexico's economy minister, Marcelo Ebrard, was reported to have said that the country seeks to increase tariffs on cars made in Asia to up to 50%. "We will increase tariffs because the price of cars arriving in Mexico is lower than what we call the reference price," Ebrard said on the sidelines of an event in the state of Mexico on Wednesday. "Our main goal is to protect jobs, and it is estimated that about 320,000 jobs are directly related to trade flows in these products."
