This week, Bitcoin Core developers falsely claimed that almost 40% of Knots nodes - Core's biggest competitor - were double-counted, creating the illusion that their actual size was exaggerated.
Citing a technical critique of the number of nodes accessible to Knots, they allege (before many posts were deleted) that as many as 39% of the nodes (1,758 out of 4,468) were duplicated in so-called "witch attacks," thereby "artificially inflating the number of Knots users."
As background, the two most popular versions of Bitcoin node software currently are: Bitcoin Core (around 80-88%), and Knots (around 12-19%). The exact percentage depends on the estimation method.
