The Department of Justice has filed a civil forfeiture lawsuit against more than $5 million worth of Bitcoin (BTC), and U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro announced that the funds were allegedly ill-gotten gains from multiple SIM swapping attacks targeting victims across the United States.
The indictment alleges that the funds can be traced back to the theft of the cryptocurrency wallets and unauthorized cryptocurrency transfers of the five victims, which took place between October 29, 2022 and March 21, 2023.
