On September 9, three people familiar with the matter said that the Bank of Japan may still reduce its purchases of ultra-long-dated Japanese government bonds slightly in the fourth quarter, despite the recent increase in yields. Such a move would be in line with market expectations and in line with the Bank of Japan's guidance to prioritize reducing its purchases of bonds with a high proportion of total issuance. They said the BoJ would make a final decision on September 30, which could be influenced by the outcome of the 20-year bond auction on September 17 and the degree of volatility in the yield of ultra-long-dated Japanese government bonds. If the BoJ does reduce its purchases of ultra-long-dated government bonds by then, it will be the second adjustment since the reduction in the second quarter.
