Informed sources: The Bank of Japan may slightly reduce its purchases of ultra-long-term Japanese government bonds in Q4

The Bank of Japan is likely to reduce its purchases of ultra-long-dated JGBs slightly in the fourth quarter in spite of the recent rise in yields, according to three people familiar with the matter. Such a move would be in line with market expectations and the BoJ's guidance to prioritise reducing its purchases of bonds with a high proportion of total issuance. They said the BoJ would make a final decision on September 30, which could be influenced by the outcome of the 20-year auction on September 17 and the degree of volatility in ultra-long JGB yields. If the BoJ does reduce its purchases of ultra-long-dated bonds by then, it will be the second adjustment since the reduction in the second quarter. (Jin 10)
