Despite a fixed cap of 21 million coins designed to combat fiat inflation and simulate the scarcity of gold, the large number of permanently lost bitcoins has further tightened supply.
On-chain analysis estimates that between 2.30 million and a staggering 7.80 million bitcoins (about 11-37% of the total supply) may have disappeared forever, trapped in lost wallets, forgotten private keys, or abandoned addresses due to accidental death. These "zombie coins" or "ghost coins" effectively reduce the effective circulating supply of bitcoins from the current 19.90 million to only 12.10 million-17.60 million.
