According to market news, the European Central Bank (ECB) has once again pushed to issue a digital euro, but it has been opposed by European Union lawmakers due to privacy protection concerns and latent risks to commercial banks.
Piero Cipollone, a member of the ECB's governing council, told parliament's economic committee on Thursday that the digital euro "will ensure that all Europeans can use a free, universally accepted digital means of payment at all times, even in the event of major disruptions". Some lawmakers raised objections, fearing that digital currencies fail to protect user privacy and that central bank-backed accounts would weaken the private sector.
