Trading firm and market maker Wintermute has asked the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) to confirm that cyber tokens should not be classified as securities. The firm said there is a need for clear guidance on the security posture of tokens to avoid misuse of securities laws and ensure the continued growth of the crypto market.
Wintermute says "network tokens" are intrinsically linked to "the functionality of a decentralized network or protocol" and are a necessary technical input for a blockchain network. That is why it says they are fundamentally different from financial products or securities.
